Timing of One’s Book Release

In life, timing is everything.

If you are signed with a traditional publisher, they will set the release date for your book. Several factors influence their decision: the best time to release the book, their marketing budget, and their publishing schedule. Sometimes the release date is 2 to 3 years in the future. While this might be frustrating, it provides you ample time to build your platform and establish your Internet presence. Proper marketing takes time to set up as well as execute.

If you are the publisher, then you will set a release date. While you may be eager to bring your book to market, don't short change your window of opportunity for promotions. Four to twelve months from the time the book begins professional editing to its release provides you ample time. If you rush a title to market without properly establishing and promoting yourself or the book, your success will be limited.

Take these points under consideration when setting the release date:
  • Does the book tie in with a holiday, such as Mother's Day or Halloween?
  • Does the book tie in with a specific event, historical or current?
  • Will it benefit mostly from Christmas sales? Or is it better suited as a beach read?
  • Will the release date provide several months or longer for early promotions?
The industry divides book releases into quarters. The fourth quarter (October – November – December) tends to be the busiest as publishers strive for Christmas sales. The first quarter boasts the least amount of book releases.

Taking your target audience’s buying habits as well as the current market into consideration, when will your book receive the greatest amount of attention? When will your target audience be the most eager to buy your book?

Remember, timing is everything!
That book is your dream.
Give it every opportunity to succeed.

CassaStorm by Alex J. Cavanaugh

Release date: September 17, 2013
Science Fiction - Space Opera/Adventure
Print ISBN 9781939844002
E-book ISBN 9781939844019

A storm gathers across the galaxy…

Byron thought he’d put the days of battle behind him. Commanding the Cassan base on Tgren, his only struggles are occasional rogue pirate raids and endless government bureaucracies. As a galaxy-wide war encroaches upon the desert planet, Byron’s ideal life is threatened and he’s caught between the Tgrens and the Cassans.

After enemy ships attack the desert planet, Byron discovers another battle within his own family. The declaration of war between all ten races triggers nightmares in his son, shaking Bassan to the core and threatening to destroy the boy’s mind.

Meanwhile the ancient alien ship is transmitting a code that might signal the end of all life in the galaxy. And the mysterious probe that almost destroyed Tgren twenty years ago could be on its way back. As his world begins to crumble, Byron suspects a connection. The storm is about to break, and Byron is caught in the middle…

Great post. Totally agree about timing :)

As many of are learning, there seem to be worse times to put out a new read than others. Great advice, Diane.

Happy weekend, Carolyn.
